Choosing the Best Name for Your Business

Do you know how to choose the best name for your business?

When asked, many experts will say that the best business names are those that contain newly coined, made-up words because people tend to remember them more than actual English words.

Others believe that a business name should be as direct and informative as possible so that the customers will immediately know what the nature of your business is.  In reality, though, any name you give your business can be as effective as you want it to be if backed by the right marketing strategy.

Here are some tips on creating a killer name for your business:

  • Make it as short as you can.  The shorter the name, the easier it is to remember.
  • Do NOT name the company with your own name.  Opt for something that can make the customers easily connect with what your products and services are.
  • Make it fitting to your projected image to gain credibility and trust.
  • Avoid using abbreviations and acronyms for a small business.
  • Make the name as distinct from the competitors’ as possible.
  • Make it unique.  Check if the name already exists.  It might even be trademarked, and you don’t want to get sued for violating the policy on trademark protection.
  • You can check name availability by performing a preliminary name search here

Choosing a Web Domain Name

After successfully creating your business name, you should be thinking about creating your own Web domain.  But before you do so, you need to consider the following:

  • Your Web domain name must be unique.  This is of the utmost importance.  If the business name you decided to use is already in existence, you might end up directing your potential customers to someone else’s website instead of yours, or it might make it difficult for clients to locate you.

Make sure that you get the domain name you want and any similar domain name in order to eliminate competition. Here is an example: www.Toronto-Maid.com and www.Toronto-Maid.ca are fairly similar. If you take both domain names, it would be difficult for any competitor to trick your customers into going to the wrong website.

The same rule would apply to using .com, .ca, .net, .org extensions and the dash (-) symbol. It is all a matter of how well you wish to be protected.

  • You can check the availability of your desired domain name and register it online here:

  • If the name of your business is too long, consider creating a shortened version of it to use as your domain name.  This will make it faster and easier for people to type in the Web address and get to your site.

  • Choose the Web domain extension (.ca, .com, .net, etc.) that best suits you, but you may want to consider registering more than one domain name.  For example, you can have one .com and one .ca, or one with the long business name and one with the shortened version of it, or one with the complete name and another with an abbreviation or acronym, and so on.  Be creative and remember that your can prevent competition by registering multiple domain names.

  • Pay attention to the words formed when the letters of the Web domain name are put next to each other.  Do they form a double meaning?  Do the words convey an unintended, unwanted meaning?  This can be a cause for customers to turn away.

Having followed the tips above, you are one step closer to achieving your much-desired business success.
